Central Processing Unit: What is CPU? (3-Minutes Reading)

Are you a newbie to the field of Computers? Are you looking for the answer to the question, What is CPU?

By reading this piece of writing, I can assure you that you would have sufficient knowledge regarding the Central Processing Unit.

Hello, My name is Masroor Amir. I am a content creator since 2016. I do this job of content creator by blogging, teaching, and creating YouTube Videos.

To prepare for this topic, I have explored a number of books and presentations by university professors.

Unfolding the Topic:

CPU is a combo or stack of digital components, responsible for controlling, executing, and managing all types of tasks or processes a computer machine does. Every digital machine has at least one core Micro-Processor which controls all the operations.

Its invention revolutionized global communications systems. Smart Machines, Computers, resulted in the International Relations concept of ‘GLOBALISATION’. Global Banking System has been fully revolutionized. For example, SWIFT Banking System has made financial transactions secure and easy.

The invention of the World Wide Web (www) is also the result of the Processor. It has changed the lifestyle of the global masses. Global Interconnectedness has become possible solely by Micro-Processor powered computers and Mobiles.

What is CPU?

Central Processing Unit - CPU
Central Processing Unit - CPU

CPU (pronounced as See Pee You) also known as Micro-Processor or Processor is an essential component of every Digital or Computer Machine. It is technically the brain of a Computer Machine. It handles and performs all types of processes, tasks, and operations for users.

The user Interacts with Micro-Processor through Input Devices (Keyboard, Touch Screens, Mic, etc.) and gets processed data in Output Devices (Monitor, Printer Sound Devices, etc).

It stores data, instructions, and processed information. It is also responsible for retrieving the stored data from memory devices.

Main Components of CPU:

Control Unit:

Control Unit is responsible to manage or control all processes and Operations. All Input and Output devices and processes are managed by Control Unit. Further, program execution is also done by this Micro-Processor Unit. Moreover, it allocates the duties to other processor components which include Athematic Logic Unit and Memory Unit.

This does not perform any task of processing or data storing etc. Instead, it only controls or manages all these processes and tasks.

Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU):

The arithmetic Logic Unit is further subdivided into two subcomponents, which include Arithmetic Unit and Logic Unit.

Arithmetic Unit:

All Arithmetic processes are done by the Arithmetic Unit of the Arithmetic Logic Unit. These processes include Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, and Division. Big and complex arithmetic processes take place in this unit to perform different tasks.

Logic Unit:

Logic Unit of Arithmetic Logic Unit performs digital logic tasks and functions. ‘AND’ and ‘NOT’ Logical Operations take place in this Subunit of the Micro-Processor. Further, comparisons, matchings, and merging of data are also performed by this Unit.

Memory (Storage) Unit:

Many Computer Science Professors do not consider Memory or Storage Units as Processor components. While others strongly believe contradictory to the former and consider Memory – Storage Unit as a core component of the Micro-Processor. Aside from the debate of recognition of the ‘Memory – Storage Unit’ as a core component of the Processor or not, it is important to focus on the functionalities of this component of the Micro-Processor.

‘Memory – Storage Unit’ is responsible to store and retrieve all Data, Instructions and Processed Information. Control Unit directs the ‘Memory – Storage Unit’ to either store the required data or retrieves stored data for further processing.

Registers:

Registers are small-size memory blocks present within the Micro-Processor. They are used to store instructions and data currently used by the processor. They must be fast for the proper speed of the processor. And they are very fast because of their small size and the nature of their build.

Applications of CPU:

  • Personal Computers (Laptops and Desktops):

Personal Computer or Laptops uses Intel or AMD Micro-Processors for Windows and Linux OS Environments. While for Latest Mac OS Apple’s owned Micro-Processors are used. Their naming culture is M1 and M2 Chipsets.

  • Mobile Devices:

Mobile Devices also use Micro-Processors for their processing capabilities. In Mobile Devices, for Android OS Snapdragon Chipsets are Popular. While in Apple’s iPhone Apple’s Bionic Chipsets are their Micro-Processors.

  • Digital Medical equipment:

In the field of Medical Technologies, most of the hospital’s digital equipment uses Micro-Processors. This revolutionized the process of Medicine Development or Pharmacy and Disease Diagnosis.

  • Space Explorations Shuttles or Devices:

Most Space Exploration devices use high technologies and machine learning models to process images and parameters for the successful completion of space exploration projects. Most Space Shuttles use Micro-Processors to handle different situations that occur in space.

Wrapping Up:

It can be concluded that the CPU is a main part of any computer or similar digital device. All computer devices, including Personal Computers, Desktops, Laptops, Mobile Phones, and Smart Watches, use Processors as their brains for tasks and operations.

Micro-Processor s has made human life easier and headache free. Its invention resulted in Science and Technological Progress. Space Explorations etc are made possible due to the Micro-Processors.
